Amid a growing cost of living crisis and concerns on UK energy supply arising from the Russia and Ukraine conflict the UK government has released an Energy Security Strategy which seeks to address supply and price volatility by strengthening the domestic supply of oil and gas and increasing renewable energy generation. This report comes out in the same week as the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report which warns that the window to limit global warming to safe levels is rapidly closing.
Commenting on the strategy David Rodger, CEO at Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), said: “We welcome the efforts being made to address the future security of UK energy supply including increased efforts to develop renewable energy solutions. These matters are vitally important for societal, environmental and economic future well-being. We therefore call for a just transition within a balanced energy mix which also considers the imperative to take quicker action to limit global warming to safe levels.”
