Introductory Remarks and Ministerial Keynote

Michael Matheson MSP

Michael Matheson was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport in May 2021. He was born in Glasgow in 1970 and educated at St John Bosco Secondary School. He went on to study at Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, where he obtained a BSc in Occupational Therapy. He also holds a BA and a Diploma in Applied Social Sciences from the Open University. Prior to becoming an MSP, Mr Matheson practised as a Community Occupational Therapist with Stirling Council, Central Regional Council, and Highland Regional Council. He was elected as the MSP for Falkirk West following the May 2007 elections. Prior to this, he was a Regional MSP for Central Scotland from 1999 to 2007.

Ian Yuill

Ian has been Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council since May 2022. He was elected to Grampian Regional Council in 1994 and has been a member of Aberdeen City Council since 1995. Ian is Convener of the Council’s Net Zero, Environment and Transport Committee and Vice Convener of the City Growth and Resources Committee. He is a non-executive member of the NHS Grampian Board and a member of both the Aberdeen City Region Deal Joint Committee and NESTRANS. He has been Scottish Liberal Democrats Group Leader on Aberdeen City Council since 2013. He was formerly Convener of the Scottish Liberal Democrats and Vice President of the UK Liberal Democrats. Ian graduated from Robert Gordon’s Institute of Technology with an honour’s degree in Business Studies. Ian was formerly a member of the senior management team of one of Scotland’s largest charities and is a Chartered Marketer.

Gordon McIntosh

Gordon was Aberdeen City Council’s director of economic development for more than 20 years. He held many other senior positions at the City Council including overseeing the enterprise, planning and infrastructure department. Shortly after retirement in 2016, he accepted an approach to be appointed the deputy minister of natural resources for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He has now returned to the UK where he is chairman of Aberdeen International Associates and has recently been reappointed to the position of visiting Professor by Robert Gordon University.

David Rodger

With over 16 years’ experience in the energy industry and over 20 years as a civil servant, David re-joined AREG in October 2021 in the role of CEO. He returns to AREG where he spent four years as communications manager from 2005-2009. He joined Vattenfall in 2009 and supported the development of the Clashindarroch onshore wind farm near Huntly, as well as the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, of which AREG was a driving partner, before joining Shell UK in 2012 – working in their external relations team based in Aberdeen. 

Maggie McGinlay

Maggie is Chief Executive of ETZ Ltd. She leads the implementation of the flagship Energy Transition Zone project located next to Aberdeen South Harbour which will be at the heart of a sustainable, integrated energy transition cluster. The project is supported by Scottish Government, UK Government and Opportunity North East (ONE). Maggie is an expert in the energy sector and economic development and is a member of the Scottish Government’s Advisory Council for Economic Transformation. Prior to joining ETZ, Maggie was Deputy Chief Executive at Opportunity North East (ONE) with responsibility for digital and energy. She joined ONE from Scottish Enterprise, where she latterly led the economic development agency’s work on energy.

Bob Sanguinetti

Bob Sanguinetti joined Port of Aberdeen as Chief Executive in 2021, bringing an extensive background in the maritime industry. Prior to joining the port, Bob led the UK Chamber of Shipping, where he influenced Government, Parliament and global organisations to champion and protect the UK’s shipping industry. Bob was Chief Executive of the Port of Gibraltar between 2014 – 2018 and has more than 20 years’ experience in the Royal Navy, in sea and land-based roles.

Mike Tholen

As Acting Chief Executive Officer within OEUK, Mike’s role is to support the UK’s offshore energy industry in its aim to accelerate the Energy Transition and achieve a “net-zero” future by 2050. He is responsible for delivery of the transformative North Sea Transition Deal which will accelerate the pace of decarbonisation across the UK economy, attracting billions of investment in CCS and hydrogen and create the energy supply chain of the future, building on its oil and gas heritage. He has been responsible for managing industry policy relationship with the UK, and Scottish Government and the EU on energy, carbon policy, economics and fiscal matters.  He formerly worked for Shell for 20 years, in a variety of engineering and commercial roles. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Davide Coppola

Davide Coppola is the Head of Space Applications Initiatives at the European Space Agency. He has been working at ESA  since 2007, attaining long-standing experience as project manager and in building strategic international cooperation. Davide has been in charge of more than 30 initiatives in various domains, including Energy, Health, Maritime & Offshore, Safety & Security, etc., lately with focus on renewable energy, green transition,  smart grids and breakthrough technologies.  

A dedicated hydrogen programme is being curated by North East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition Steering Committee (NESH2A), a group of experienced executives from both public and private sector organisations who are actively working on developing a hydrogen economy in the region, including Aberdeen City Council, bp, Storegga, Net Zero Technology Centre, ERM, SGN, ETZ Ltd, Hydrasun, Scottish Enterprise and North East Scotland College. This session will feature:

Stephen Sheal

Stephen is Head of External Relations at the Net Zero Technology Centre, where his mission is to enable the development and deployment of technology for an affordable net-zero energy future. He has extensive interaction with Scottish and UK Government officials on the subjects of energy transition, innovation and policy. He is vice president of the Scottish Energy Forum, a member of the North East SCDI committee and a member of the SCDI Policy Committee. Stephen is passionate about achieving the energy transition, reducing fuel poverty, and making Scotland thrive.

Dr Oliver Taylor

Dr Oliver Taylor is head of UK business development for bp, working within the part of bp that is focused on Regions, Corporates & Solutions. Oli has been working with Aberdeen City Council since 2020 when bp and the local authority began a partnership to help the city deliver its ambition to be a climate positive city and deliver its net zero goals. Through his work at bp, Oli launched a circular economy business focused on reducing waste in automotive engine oils and worked as chief of staff to bp’s chief scientist and head of downstream technology.

Martyn Tulloch

Martyn leads the Net Zero Technology Centre’s Energy System Integration programme, which covers Hydrogen, Offshore Wind and CCUS. A chartered engineer who has worked in both the oil and gas and renewable energy sectors over the last 25 years, he believes that the skills, experience and infrastructure established over the last five decades in the Scottish energy sector will have a pivotal role to play if Europe is to meet its net-zero targets. The Net Zero Technology Centre co-invests with industry and works in partnership with the public and private sectors, funding R&D, driving investment, building a clean energy eco-system and influencing policy to accelerate the transition and close the gap on net zero technologies.

Kirstin Gardner

Kirstin is a Project Manager for SGN Energy Futures System Transformation and Business Development Team. She has a strong background in renewables and low-carbon energy, joining SGN following two years as project manager for Crown Estate Scotland’s ScotWind Leasing round. Prior to that, Kirstin spent 10 years managing the consents process for energy projects ranging in size from embedded to nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPs).

Bob Drummond

Bob is CEO of Hydrasun Group, a leading international provider of fluid transfer, power and control solutions to the energy industry. In addition to its business operations in the Oil & Gas sector, Hydrasun has been positioning for the energy transition in recent years, particularly in the emerging hydrogen sector where it has around 6 years experience in a number of green hydrogen projects. Bob has worked in the Energy industry throughout his entire career and prior to joining Hydrasun has been CEO / Managing Director in a number of major energy service companies including Maersk UK, Salamis Group, Wood Group Engineering and Rigblast Energy Services Group.

Sarah Potts

Sarah Potts is the Head of Hydrogen at Storegga, a developer of low-carbon solutions across the carbon capture and hydrogen value chains.  Storegga are the lead developer of the Acorn Cluster, which includes Acorn Hydrogen and is also partnering with Scottish Power on the Cromarty Green Hydrogen project.  Sarah is passionate about the role of Hydrogen in the Energy Transition as well as the value of systems thinking in the development of the technology and business solutions required to enable it.  Prior to joining Storegga at the start of 2022, Sarah worked for Shell, as Vice President Innovation Excellence and Technology Portfolio Manager in Shell’s Projects and Technology organization based in Amsterdam.

Mike Fleming

Mike is an experienced Non-Executive Director and investor. He has been a board member of the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) since 2021 and also serves as an Independent Chair for the North-East Scotland Hydrogen Ambition Steering Committee. Mike has a diverse professional background, with a successful track record of working with technology and service companies in the upstream oil and gas industry. Mike also supports organisations within the not-for-profit sector, recently completing 5 years as a governor of Robert Gordon University (RGU) and for the last 3 years, served as chairman of the RGU Board.  He holds an MSc in Engineering Geology from the University of Leeds which he has utilised in a number of well-technology-oriented engineering roles since 1981. 

Emma Watt

Emma is Team Leader for the hydrogen programme within Aberdeen City Council and manages the team responsible for delivering the Hydrogen Strategy for the city. Emma has led a range of city development projects for Aberdeen City Council since 2008 and delivered notable firsts for the city including the hydrogen bus demonstration project launched in 2015; and the build of the first hydrogen production and refuelling station in the UK. Emma’s current role includes managing a team of City Officers responsible for delivering the city’s strategic and demonstration hydrogen projects, including funding mechanisms; analysing supply and demand; and the use of operational hydrogen assets, such as the city’s wide range of hydrogen vehicles and second production & re-fuelling facility.

Emma Young

Emma Young is one of the climate change leads at Aberdeen City Council, focused primarily on the co-creation and delivery of Net Zero Aberdeen and Aberdeen Adapts; place-based route maps setting our pathways towards Aberdeen achieving its climate and just energy transition ambitions. This includes development and co-ordination of the Aberdeen Climate Pledge; encouraging organisations and individuals to commit and act towards collectively securing our city climate ambitions. Emma worked in the private sector prior to moving into local government, with experience in the Energy, Telecommunications Manufacturing, Engineering, Facilities Management and Spirits industries. Emma is Vice Chair of the IEMA Scotland North: Regional Steering Group.

Emma Harrick

Emma is Head of Energy Transition and Supply Chain at Scottish Renewables. Scottish Renewables is the voice of Scotland’s renewable energy industry and works to grow the sector as well as sustain its position at the forefront of the global clean energy industry. Emma comes from a background in the renewable energy supply chain with experience in engineering, fabrication and port services organisations. She has an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by companies who are hoping to benefit from the opportunities presented by net-zero technology projects. In her role at Scottish Renewables Emma works collaboratively across the sector through her engagement with stakeholders to champion the organisations making up the growing renewable energy supply chain in Scotland.

Allister Thomas

Allister leads the editorial team at Energy Voice, reporting on the critical energy transition for the North Sea and further afield. Recent coverage has included the COP26 climate conference, the ScotWind leasing auction and key regulatory and societal issues for the future of the sector, including exclusive stories on ground-breaking new hydrogen technology, evidence of sexism offshore, and firms defaulting on decommissioning payments. Allister was nominated for Scottish specialist reporter of the year in 2021 for an investigation into an air diving incident which left a young man without many of his basic motor functions.

Richard Sandford

Richard has over 35 years of experience in the energy industry. An engineer by background, Richard started his career as an apprentice at the CEGB, holding roles in engineering, operations, and maintenance before moving into the renewables sector in 2008. He was Project Director for Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm and has held various global offshore wind leadership roles since. He is a leading member of the Offshore Wind Industry Council and Chairman of the World Forum Offshore Wind, dedicated to fostering the global growth of offshore wind energy. More recently, Richard joined bp as Vice President of offshore wind in the UK, responsible for the development, construction, and operations of bp’s portfolio of projects including Morgan, Mona, and Morven.

Dr Nigel Robinson

As Apollo’s Sustainable Energy Director, Dr Nigel Robinson heads up a portfolio of engineering services across the wind, wave, tidal, hydrogen and CCUS sectors. Nigel’s career experience encompasses technical and commercial leadership roles in the UK and overseas. As a practicing engineer, he has supported a broad range of offshore structures and floating assets, acquiring specialist knowledge of marine operations, structural dynamics, moorings, flexibles and integrity management. He is a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, regularly presenting at industry conferences and at high level in client organisations. In line with Apollo’s motto, he is very much “passionate about engineering” and even more so about a sustainable energy future. 

Beena Sharma

A multi award-winning, results-driven, and self-motivated Director with experience in various industries including oil & gas, renewables, manufacturing, construction, cleantech, and healthcare. Focused primarily on driving innovative approaches towards net zero including technology focused start-ups in Biotechnology and Carbon Capture and Utilisation. Proven experience in managing high growth and innovative businesses, developing behavioural change, change management, climate change programmes and driving net zero strategy for businesses. Professional with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), a Postgraduate in Psychology and a qualified Carbon management specialist. 

Dr Jonathan Lindsay

Operations & Technology Director at EMEC since 2017.  EMEC, based in Orkney, is the foremost wave and tidal energy test centre in the world.  The majority of Jonathan’s experience has been in the Oil & Gas Industry, with companies such as Wood Group and McDermotts.  Initially working in subsea engineering, firstly in offshore geotechnics, then subsea pipelines, he gradually moved from engineering to project and company management over a period of 25 years. In the last 10 years, he has been getting involved in more and more offshore renewables projects, culminating in the offer to join EMEC. 

Bethan Vasey

Bethan Vasey, General Manager Energy Transition Shell Upstream UK, delivering change to the business in line with our carbon ambitions. Prior to this Bethan worked on Brent Field Decommissioning since 2014, overseeing the Brent Delta single lift and onshore dismantlement. A chartered Project Manager and Civil Engineer with a Masters from Cambridge University, she has delivered global projects in challenging environments  including work in the North Sea, Siberia, Qatar and Kazakhstan. Previously Bethan also worked in a variety of technical and commercial upstream roles including Global Upstream Joint Ventures and external policy development.

Catrin Jones

Catrin heads up stakeholder engagement across Vattenfall’s offshore wind markets. A partner since 2008, in Scottish and UK Net Zero ambitions, Vattenfall is a European leader in offshore wind, with more than 2GW in operation, 1.5 GW under construction and an ambition for 15GW installed by 2030. Vattenfall’s expertise, innovation and investments open pathways to expansion, for example: Hydrogen Turbine 1 (HT1) Project – a world first hydrogen-producing turbine at the Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm; floating capacity at Muir Mhor in partnership with Fred.Olsen Seawind; the Norfolk Zone’s coordinated HVDC transmission system, and advances spanning system integration to biodiversity net gain, across the North and Baltic Seas.

Nassima Brown

Nassima is a co-founder and a director of strategy at Fennex, a multi-award winning technology company specialising in AI and cloud computing focused on revolutionising the digital transformation in the energy sector. Nassima is also a guest lecturer at Robert Gordon College in Wells Engineering. With over 20 years global experience in the energy sector,  she started her career with Schlumberger as a field engineer, where she had several leadership engineering and commercial roles, supporting a global portfolio of complex offshore well construction projects and drilling services.  She has also been recently appointed as a board member within the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).

Scott Hamilton

Scott Hamilton is the head of offshore renewables at Xodus – offering technically, economically, ethically and environmentally sustainable products and solutions to clients and the wider industry. In providing techno-economic advisory to the renewable energy market, Scott helps lenders, developers and the wider supply chain identify and capitalise on opportunities and mitigate against risks. Scott has a substantial background in providing technical consultancy, due diligence and market analysis to clients of all sizes and across both the onshore and offshore wind markets. His in-depth industry knowledge helps clients identify and make the most of opportunities in renewable energy.

Chris Ayres

Chris is Chief Customer Officer for OPEX Group, a leading provider of artificial intelligence solutions for the oil, gas and energy industries. A chartered engineer with two decades experience in the oil and gas sector, Chris has a diverse background of leadership experience in management consulting and digital project delivery.  Chris has worked with large multi-national organisations across many sectors, leading and advising them through digital transformation projects. As CCO of OPEX Group, Chris is focused on helping customers to manage the duel challenge of maximising production whilst minimising emissions.  

Dr Douglas Leith

Dr Douglas Leith is Chief Creative Officer at STC INSISO responsible for the development of Designed for Business projects which improve the processes and performance of an international client base. Douglas is a Chartered Engineer, holds an engineering PhD in Artificial Intelligence, and is a Project Management Professional (PMP).  He has worked across a wide range of industries including oil & gas, power generation, construction, and manufacturing, as well as cross-pollinating his skills to maritime, property management, medical and the public sector. Prior to joining STC INSISO Douglas was involved in technology project management, and was awarded the Queen’s Award for Technology. 

Bill Cattanach OBE

Bill has been involved in the promotion of Oil and Gas expertise and the UK supply chain for over 20 years and has extensive knowledge across the sector. During this time, he administered and actively participated on the Government/ Industry forum PILOT where many of the enabling initiatives for the sector were developed. Currently Bill is Head of Supply Chain at the Oil & Gas Authority where he is tasked with promoting and growing a competitive and competent service sector. This covers the entire spectrum from exploration through to decommissioning as well as energy transition and in doing so promote a supply chain which can compete on a global basis and win significant value for the UK economy.

Huw Bell

Huw Bell is the project director for the Salamander Floating Wind Project. Salamander has a strong focus on supply chain development and will provide an opportunity for the local supply chain to gear up for commercial scale opportunities in Scotland, as well as de-risking floating wind technologies for the future commercial projects in Scotland and beyond. This will allow Scotland to maximise the financial benefit of its strong offshore wind resource and generate long term jobs for its local communities.  Huw is chartered engineer with over 15 years of experience in offshore energy.  He has managed projects throughout their lifecycle from early stage studies through to mobilisation and supervision of packages offshore.

Graeme Rafferty

Graeme is a Supply Chain Policy Adviser at Offshore Energies UK (OEUK), the leading body for the UK’s integrating offshore energies industry. OEUK’s membership includes over 400 organisations with an interest in offshore oil, gas, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and wind, with all focused on safely providing cleaner, fuel and power to the UK. His objectives involve supporting with forums and industry initiatives that aim to ensure that the UKCS is a competitive and attractive place to do business including promoting adherence to OEUK’s Supply Chain Principles. Graeme has an MSc in purchasing and supply chain management, from Robert Gordon University. He previously worked for Schlumberger and gained experience in several different supply chain roles covering European operations.

Allan Taylor

Allan has been in the Civil Service for 37 years and with BEIS since 1999 where he started work as an Oil and Gas Accountant before moving into the renewable energy policy area in 2003 where he has worked on increasing UK economic benefit from renewable energy.  He has been Head of Offshore Wind Investment since 2009.

Neil Gordon

Neil Gordon is chief executive of Global Underwater Hub– an organisation playing a key role in the most far-reaching transformation of the UK energy industry. A seasoned and well-respected industry leader, Neil has more than thirty years’ management experience in director and business development roles including more two decades working in the subsea industry.   In 2021, Neil successfully launched Global Underwater Hub, the leading trade and industry development body for the UK’s underwater sectors.  

Paul de Leeuw

Paul is a senior industry leader and executive with over 34 years’ experience in the global energy sector. He has worked for a wide range of companies, including Shell, Marathon Oil, Amoco, BP, Venture Production and Centrica. He is currently the Director of Robert Gordon University’s Energy Transition Institute, Chair of PlanSea Solutions, a government and industry advisor, a Board member of the International School in Aberdeen and a Professor at Robert Gordon University (UK). Paul is an experienced non-executive director, with over 25 years of involvement in public, private and voluntary sector organisations. 

Rebecca Groundwater

Rebecca Groundwater has spent many years working for politicians, both back and front benchers in Brussels, Westminster and the Scottish Parliament. She has campaign experience working on a US presidential campaign, numerous referendums and elections for all parliaments. She then moved to a trade association representing the offshore industry and now heads up the External Affairs team at the EIC. She is responsible for external communications and stakeholder engagement with all governments and key agencies throughout all areas where EIC members are active and brings a wealth of experience in influencing politicians; campaigning; advising on policy and delivering stakeholder engagement strategies. 

John Underhill

John is Aberdeen University’s Director for Energy Transition. A geoscientist by training, his main research interests are in the use of geophysical methods and geological techniques to characterise and critically evaluate the potential to use subsurface sites in an effort to decarbonise and meet our Net Zero emission targets in the energy transition. He has been an active academic researcher for more than 3 decades during which time he has received EAGE’s Alfred Wegener Medal, the AAPG’s George C. Matson, Grover E. Murray Distinguished Educator, and Ziad Beydoun awards, the Geological Society’s Lyell Medal and the Energy Group’s Silver Medal. John currently populates the North Sea Transition Authority’s Exploration Task Force and the Scottish Government’s Science Advisory Council.

Andy Williamson

Andy leads Energy Transition and is focused on developing the net zero workforce of the future, building on OPITO’s reputation as a global leader in safety and skills working with the energy industry, government and a wide range of stakeholders. Leading OPITO’s Energy Transition activity, Andy is building partnerships with a variety of organisations globally with a common interest in developing a safe, skilled and mobile workforce able to work across various areas of the integrated energy space. Andy came to this role after spending most of his career in the energy industry, working internationally in various roles spanning onshore and offshore renewables, subsea and marine services. A passionate STEM ambassador for the energy sector, he actively supports various organisations and initiatives that aim to inspire future generations to help change the energy mix of the future.

Richard Bryce

Richard is currently HR Director for Baker Hughes in the Europe region and sits on the Baker Hughes UK DE&I Council.  He has over 25 years experience in the oil, gas and power industries, providing expert advice & guidance in the areas of HR and recruitment operations for projects and operations across the Europe, Latin America and Caspian regions.  Richard has Masters degree in Project Management, and is a Chartered Fellow of the CIPD

Lolita Jackson 

Lolita Jackson MBE is the Executive Director of Communications & Sustainable Cities and is the link to governments around the world, also working on media relations, COP, UN and climate and business network engagement.  Lolita previously worked for the NYC Mayor’s Office for 15 years in a variety of roles, last serving as the Special Advisor for Climate Policy & Programs, where she was the climate diplomat for NYC and lead for the administration regarding global work on divestment and climate finance.  Lolita was named to the City & State Power 100 list for 2022.  She is an alumna of the Penn School of Engineering.
