Scottish Renewables’ Planning Conference will map out the policy changes required, examine the business opportunities – as well as the obstacles – which lie ahead and consider the system changes needed to enable deployment at the pace and scale required to reach net-zero by 2045.
The target to be a net-zero nation by 2045 is more than two years old and the Climate Change Committee’s December 2022 assessment was unequivocal: The Scottish Government lacks a clear delivery plan for achieving Scotland’s bold emissions reduction targets.
Net-zero will be impossible without a huge upswing in renewables deployment and ambition is high – 12GW of additional onshore wind, 28GW of ScotWind projects, 4-6GW of solar, with much greater deployment of pumped storage hydro, low-carbon heat and hydrogen also urgently needed.
The long-promised Energy Strategy & Just Transition Plan is out for consultation and the National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4) has finally been published. Together they should provide a coherent plan to accelerate deployment and achieve the volumes of onshore and offshore renewables net-zero demands. But will they?
With demanding targets to be reached, the clock ticking loudly, and a coherent plan urgently needed, Scottish Renewables’ Planning Conference 2023 will examine these issues and more.
