MEMBER NEWS: Deep dive under the sea at Aberdeen Science Centre

Aberdeen Science Centre is giving budding marine biologists the chance to dive into the fascinating world beneath the sea this summer, with a special Marine Discovery Day.

The marine-themed workshop on Thursday, August 1 will allow participants to get hands-on with sea creatures from our local shores with the expert team from Macduff Marine Aquarium who are bringing along their mobile touch pools.

The free session, which has been made possible thanks to funding from the Scottish Fishermen’s Trust and Aberdeen City Council’s Festival of the Seas, will also include an optional clean-up event and other activities on Aberdeen beach.

Participants will have the chance to carry out wildlife identification and sample collection, among other fun activities with the science centre, Dolphin Watch and Greyhope Bay.

Visitors will also be able to join in with a workshop in The Lab, which is sponsored by Apache North Sea. The session will explore how to make sure our marine life, beaches and seas stay healthy, with a chance to look for microorganisms through a microscope.

Lynda McConnach, public and digital programme co-ordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for anyone interested in marine biology to come down to Aberdeen Science Centre and get some real-life, hands-on experience.

“Throughout the session they will have the opportunity to get an understanding of what marine biology entails, through experiencing and interacting with marine exhibits in Aberdeen Science Centre as well as heading out to the beach to put their newfound skills and knowledge into practice.”

The Marine Discovery Day is free to attend and does not need to be booked in advance.

The Marine Discovery Day is part of Aberdeen Science Centre’s Neighbourhood Nature theme which aims to encourage visitors to the venue to discover more about the secret life of Aberdeen’s animals and plants.

Running until August 25, the nature theme includes a variety of fun and family friendly activities, workshops and events that are focused on bees, trees, urban animals as well as marine life.

Calli added: “Throughout the summer visitors can take part in the Brilliant Bees Show and interact with the Urban Animal Behaviour Activity Station. These are fantastic ways to get hands-on with nature and learn more about the animals we share our world with.”

Based on Constitution Street near Aberdeen beach, ASC is home to almost 65 interactive exhibits, allowing people of all ages to discover topics including Space, Energy, Life Sciences, Engineering, and much more.
