MEMBER NEWS: Bumper year for Brimmond as turnover soars by 74% to £11.4m

North-east Scotland based engineering specialists, Brimmond have announced a 74% increase in turnover for the year 2023 – 24, reaching £11.4m, far exceeding their forecast of £10m.

A number of high-value contract wins across multiple sectors have contributed to this exceptional financial position:

  • A 5-year service contract with British Antarctic Survey (BAS) for crane servicing and engineering support on the Royal Research Ship (RRS), Sir David Attenborough. The company’s largest service contract to date will see Brimmond become the main hydraulic contractor for refit periods, working across the ship’s Rosyth and Harwich bases.
  • A significant six-figure project for an offshore renewables project to design and manufacture a 1800kW Seawater Jetting Spread package.
  • The design and manufacture of an IWOCS (intervention workover control system) Umbilical Reeler for Rosebank oil and gas field.
  • A long-term six-figure rental of the company’s largest marine crane to assist with the P&A decommissioning campaign of the Thistle Alpha.
  • Brimmond’s marine crane division, headed up by Paul Dingwall, has generated over £2million since April this year alone.

Situated in Kintore, Aberdeenshire, Brimmond specialises in the design, manufacture, rental and repair of lifting, mechanical and hydraulic equipment for industry.

With customer demand accelerating business growth, Brimmond embarked on an extensive recruitment campaign, increasing the firm’s headcount from 40 to 52 in the space of a year. A re-structuring of the senior leadership team to align with the growth strategy has also seen the recent appointments of Matt Nicoll as Sales Director, and Craig Yeoman as Head of Finance.

As the organisation expands, Brimmond has committed to further streamlining operations, particularly harnessing data driven efficiencies as part of a digitalisation project. Mike Berry has been appointed as Project Implementation Manager to lead this and is responsible for implementing a new ERP system across the business’ divisions and departments.

Managing Director of Brimmond, Tom Murdoch, said: “Whilst we anticipated growth for the company over the past financial year, the extent of that growth has far exceeded our expectations. I am extremely grateful to our incredible team for their hard work and commitment to delivering exceptional equipment and services, as well as welcoming new team members and helping train them to the highest standards of the ‘Brimmond way’.

“Over the past year we have recruited into every aspect of the business, from support services to engineering and apprentices to leadership; we are committed to increasing both our capability and capacity.

“For any SME exceeding the £10m turnover mark and surpassing a headcount of 50 is a significant milestone. Brimmond’s performance over the past financial year is one I am immensely proud of.”

Despite working on projects around the world, Brimmond is very much rooted in the local community where they are based, and the team are passionate about giving back to the community. The recently established ‘Brimmond Community Fund’ provides support for local charities and organisations close to the hearts of their staff members. Staff also voted Charlie House as their charity partner in 2019. Since then, they have organised and participated in a range of fundraising activities, raising over £100,000.

Established as a family business 28 years ago by the current Managing Director’s father, Alistair Murdoch, Brimmond is based at a purpose-built facility located on 2.5 acres of land in Kintore. Last year, the business invested £250k in a 1300ft² extension which is a dedicated area for fabricating and welding, reflecting the company’s dedication to high quality manufacturing and repair services.

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
