An internationally renowned Professor and expert on nutrition and human health has been appointed chair of the board of Aberdeen Science Centre.
Professor (Emeritus) Susan Duthie recently retired from her post as Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Exchange in the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University.
She is joined on the board by leading PR specialist Zoe Ogilvie, of BIG Partnership, who has joined as a director after being an advisor to the board for two years.
Bryan Snelling, chief executive of the science centre, said Prof Duthie’s vast experience in scientific research would be invaluable.
“We are honoured to welcome Susan as our new chair and we look forward to drawing on her extensive experience in the field of life sciences, which is reflected in one of the zones in the centre,” he said.
“Inspiring the next generation of scientists is key to all our futures and we are also delighted to have Zoe Ogilvie on the board, bringing a fresh perspective on how we market ourselves as well as providing vital insight and connections with the energy industry.
“These key appointments underpin our commitment to delivering unparalleled STEM experiences for visitors at Aberdeen Science Centre, unleashing the power of curiosity for all ages and inspiring a lifelong interest in science. The mix of essential skills will help us build on the success we have seen to date.”
Prof Duthie was a principal member of RGU’s School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences Leadership Group and held responsibility for developing and supporting strategic direction for research.
She has published more than 100 papers, book chapters and reviews and is recognised nationally and internationally as an expert in the field of nutrition and human health, particularly with regards to folate and DNA stability related to cancer.
Susan, a former senior researcher at the Rowett Institute, maintains strong research and teaching links with the University of Aberdeen, and has served on the Food Standards Agency Advisory Committee for Novel Foods and Processes, which makes recommendations to the UK Government on food safety issues.
Speaking about her appointment, Prof Duthie said: “Science impacts our lives every day and I look forward to using my experience in research and higher education to help Aberdeen Science Centre to find new ways to inspire the next generation of scientists.
“I am honoured to have been appointed as the chair of Aberdeen Science Centre. I am looking forward to using my skills to lead the board and progress the work that has been done so far to establish the centre as a leading STEM education charity and visitor attraction.”
Prof Duthie takes over from interim chair Sandy Morton, who returns to his role as treasurer with immediate effect.
