Member News: i-Protech delivers one of its largest solar installs in its 10-year history for Balmoral Comtec

Kintore-based solar specialist i-Protech has successfully completed one of its largest installations to date, delivering a high-efficiency solar PV system for Balmoral’s Comtec facility.

The project marks a major milestone for i-Protech, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this month.

The system, which is connected to one of the six main office buildings on Balmoral’s 45-acre site at Loirston, comprises 152 high-efficiency solar panels with a total capacity of almost 70kW.

Designed to maximise on-site consumption, it powers Balmoral Comtec’s operations during daylight hours, supplying around 31% of its office’s annual electricity demand, with output peaking at up to 70% during the summer months.

Surplus energy is exported to the National Grid, ensuring immediate carbon and cost reductions.

The team at i-Protech, which earlier this year was awarded ISO 9001 certification, worked closely with Balmoral Comtec to tailor the system to the site’s needs, completing the installation in time for peak summer output.

Fraser Robertson, Manufacturing Engineer at Balmoral Comtec, said that installing solar power reflected Balmoral’s long-term commitment to sustainability and innovation, while also making practical sense.

He said: “By generating clean electricity on-site, we can reduce our environmental impact, cut costs in our offices, and reduce our reliance on the Grid. It’s about leading by example, showing that even in energy-intensive industries, there are real opportunities to make positive, forward-looking changes.

“Beyond the numbers, it’s also an important step in building our experience with renewable energy as we explore further opportunities across the wider Balmoral Comtec site. We chose to work with i-Protech because working with a local partner who was keen to grow alongside us was important. They brought the right mix of technical know-how and collaborative spirit and handled the challenges of a large-scale installation with professionalism, delivering a system that’s already making a difference.”

i-Protech Director Stuart Munro described the install as a showcase of what’s possible when local businesses work together to drive clean energy innovation.

“Celebrating our 10th anniversary this year makes this project with Balmoral Comtec especially meaningful for the whole team at i-Protech.

“We work with customers across the board, from homeowners to large commercial sites and they can all expect the same level of service. As with any project of this scale and complexity, it wasn’t without its challenges, but to deliver a solar PV installation of this size is a proud milestone, not just for us, but for what it represents in terms of local collaboration driving real progress in clean energy.

“Working alongside Balmoral Comtec, a local company with a long history in the North-east, has been a privilege. Together, we’ve shown how tailored, high-efficiency systems can make a tangible impact, and we’re excited to keep pushing boundaries as we enter our next decade.”

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
