Member News: Vattenfall takes full FID on 1.6-GW Nordlicht offshore wind duo

Vattenfall has taken full final investment decision for its 1600MW Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms after the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency’s permit for the latter became irrevocable.

The company said construction of the cluster will begin in 2026, with monopile installation for Nordlicht 1 scheduled for the third quarter of the year.

According to Vattenfall, Nordlicht 2 will follow about one year later and both wind farms are expected to be operational in 2028 with a combined net capacity of over 1.6GW.

The permit removes the condition attached to the March 2025 investment decision for Nordlicht 2 and follows planning approval issued in October 2025.

“Securing the irrevocable permi and reaching our full investment decision marks a defining moment for Nordlicht,” said Catrin Jung, senior vice president and head of business area wind.

“This project is about more than building offshore wind capacity – it’s about strengthening Europe’s competitiveness and reducing reliance on fossil fuels,” Jung added.

“As part of our sustainability efforts, both wind farms will feature turbine towers partially made with low-emission steel, reducing their overall carbon footprint by 16 percent,” she stated.

Vattenfall said it remains one of Europe’s largest offshore wind players and last year secured an irrevocable permit for the 2GW Zeevonk project in the Netherlands with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
