AREG NEWS: AREG commentary on the General Election announcement

Jean Morrison, chair of Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), has commented on the announcement that the UK General Election will take place on Thursday, 4 July.

She said: “With the election date now on the horizon, we are calling on all parties to focus on a joined-up approach to the energy transition, with policies that place emphasis on job security and increasing investment in the renewables sector.

“Whoever governs the UK will have an important role to play in ensuring we achieve our decarbonisation ambitions, building on the country’s decades of experience in the energy sector. It is imperative that we install critical new infrastructure and grow our skills and capabilities to meet net zero targets, accelerate economic growth and further position the UK as an energy transition leader.”

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives.
