Local science visitor attraction partners with TAQA to introduce new engineering theme

Aberdeen Science Centre is looking to inspire the next generation of engineers and innovators as part of latest theme. The Mission: Engineer theme, which started running at the centre earlier this month and is supported by TAQA UK, will see visitors explore different branches of engineering and their real-world applications through new workshops and activities.

Available at weekends and school holidays throughout September and October, the new suite of engineering and building activities will include a brand-new workshop, story sessions and fun games across the centre’s interactive exhibition space. The ‘Designed for Impact’ workshop will introduce visitors to the world of engineering, as they discover the skills engineers need and explore the fundamentals of design, before putting what they know to the test as they build their own prototype.

These hands-on sessions will challenge family members of all ages to think creatively to solve engineering problems. Alongside this, the new Tinker Lab will allow children to step into the shoes of an engineer as they test out different building materials including K’Nex, Lego, cardboard, paper and recyclable materials.

For the more junior visitors to the centre, there will be a special story session available in its Under 6s Zone that explores the story of the Three Little Pigs as they construct their homes. Children can then bring the story to life as they build small houses from straw, sticks and bricks to see what can withstand the huffing and puffing of the big bad wolf!

Other engineering-themed activities will also be available throughout the centre’s exhibition floors.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive officer at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “Mission: Engineer is the latest themed programme at Aberdeen Science Centre, designed to spark curiosity in visitors of all ages about the world of engineering. By giving families the chance to explore real-world engineering challenges through play, problem-solving and hands-on experiments, we hope to showcase the vital role engineers play in shaping the world around us.

“We are honoured to partner with TAQA UK on this new theme, as their support, alongside our other corporate partners, allows us to continue developing new and engaging activities so that every visit to Aberdeen Science Centre feels unique.”

All Mission: Engineer activities are included as part of the standard entry price at Aberdeen Science Centre.

Sandy Hutchinson, TAQA UK managing director, said: “At TAQA, we believe in inspiring the next generation to explore the possibilities of engineering and innovation. Our partnership with Aberdeen Science Centre reflects our commitment to education and community engagement, helping young people develop the skills and curiosity to become the next generation of innovators.”

In addition to the Mission: Engineer theme, Aberdeen Science Centre is also hosting engineering-focused Virtual Reality (VR) activities throughout September and October. The “Engineering the Past” VR experience allows visitors to time travel to see the greatest engineering marvels of history, including Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine and the Wright Brother’s ‘Wright Flyer’.

Suitable for children aged 7+, participants will explore the lives of people from the Bronze Age, Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Roman Empire, and look at what future technologies could look like.

In addition to corporate sponsorship opportunities, the visitor attraction, which is open seven days a week, also offers exclusive venue and room hire for corporate, social, and private events.

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
