Member News: COMET partners with Rail Safe Friendly to promote rail safety awareness in UK schools

COMET, a leading provider of incident management and root cause analysis software across high-risk industries, including the rail sector, is proud to announce its partnership with the Rail Safe Friendly (RSF). The programme runs in collaboration with Learn Live and aims to educate young people on the dangers of the railway through engaging, age-appropriate safety broadcasts delivered directly into classrooms. 

COMET has selected 10 schools across the UK to sponsor as part of its first year of involvement with RSF, supporting the delivery of essential rail safety education to pupils and staff. The programme aligns with COMET’s broader mission to improve safety, prevent incidents, and protect lives — not just in the workplace, but in communities too. 

“As an organisation that works closely with the rail industry, we see first-hand how safety relies on both operational excellence and public awareness,” said Steve Holmes, COO of COMET. “Rail Safe Friendly brings that awareness right to the heart of local communities, starting with our schools. We’re proud to support this initiative and play a small part in helping give young people the knowledge to stay safe around the railway.”

The RSF Programme was founded to help prevent devastating incidents like the one that took the life of 11-year-old Harrison Ballantyne, who was fatally electrocuted after entering a rail freight depot to retrieve a football. His story has become a powerful motivator for rail organisations, schools and families to take action on safety education. 

COMET’s sponsorship includes schools nominated by employees as well as schools in areas of known interest or high need identified by RSF. Participating schools receive access to a suite of educational broadcasts suitable for all key stages, including SEND-accessible content, and are guided through RSF’s Bronze, Silver and Gold accreditation process.
