Member News: Global Underwater Hub and UK Marine Energy Council event to explore multi-billion pound opportunity in wave and tidal

Following the launch of the UK government’s Marine Energy Taskforce (MET) earlier this year, Global Underwater Hub (GUH) has partnered with the UK Marine Energy Council (MEC) to explore the vast potential of the marine energy market in an upcoming event in Aberdeen.

Taking place on Thursday, 2 October at the GUH office in Westhill, the Marine Energy 2025 event will shine a light on the latest advancements in wave and tidal energy. Marine energy is an area of great opportunity for the UK, with a recent policy paper from the Supergen ORE Hub and the Policy and Innovation Group at the University of Edinburgh concluding that the UK could add up to £50 billion to its economy and create more than 90,000 jobs by leading the global marine energy market.

The one-day Marine Energy 2025 event will be split into two distinct parts, with delegates during the first part gaining insight into new technologies, industry trends and an overview of the marine energy market opportunity.

The second part of the day will be focused on stakeholder engagement to allow the MET to gather views and opinions from delegates around four key areas supporting the development of the marine energy sector: site development, financing, innovation and supply chain growth.

The MET, a 12-month initiative launched by the Energy Minister, Michael Shanks MP, in June, includes the UK Marine Energy Council (MEC), The Crown Estate and Crown Estate Scotland, among others, and is tasked with investigating what actions are required to realise the UK’s marine energy potential in a manner that maintains high levels of UK content.

Neil Gordon, chief executive at Global Underwater Hub, said: “The potential of the UK’s marine energy sector is enormous, capable of generating more than £50 billion for the UK economy. With more than 30 GW of marine energy potential, the UK has the capacity to lead the world in developing, deploying and exporting wave and tidal technologies.

“GUH’s Marine Energy 2025 event, in partnership with the UK Marine Energy Council, will shine a spotlight on the challenges and opportunities ahead, bringing together

developers, the supply chain, investors and stakeholders to ensure the UK capitalises on its potential in this space.”

The event will be chaired by Sue Bartlett-Reid, chairperson of the UK Marine Energy Council and the Marine Energy Taskforce.

She said: “Marine Energy has the potential to support net zero ambitions, but more critically, support UK economic growth. This event will showcase some of the leading technologies and projects in wave and tidal stream energy and will also explore how our supply chains can be supported to deliver growth.

“The stakeholder engagement event will feed into the UK government’s Marine Energy Taskforce, with the aims of increased installed capacity, economic growth and continued high levels of UK supply chain content.”

The Marine Energy 2025 event will offer delegates the opportunity to learn about different wave and tidal technologies and discover more about the market potential in UK waters for marine energy, alongside contributing to shaping the work being undertaken by the MET.

Confirmed speakers for this event include Eileen Linklater, corporate affairs director at the European Marine Energy Centre, Fraser Johnson, director of operations and assets at Meygen, Ian Crossland, commercial director at Mocean Energy, Oliver Wragg, development director at Orbital Marine Power and Tom Hutchinson, director product and services at Proteus.

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
