What began as a one-person operation providing CCTV for farmers looking to monitor their cows calving remotely, has grown into a thriving business with a team of 13 staff, as well as contractors, delivering the latest security systems, solar power installations and EV infrastructure to customers across the region and beyond.

Founded in 2015 by Stuart Munro, i-Protech was established during a challenging period in the oil and gas industry.

“I had spent many years offshore and onshore in the oil industry, working in a variety of roles with companies such as Weatherford, Expro, FMC, and more senior roles with Kvaerner and Shell,” said Stuart. “When the industry faced a downturn, I felt I had had enough and wanted a new start. I saw an opportunity to do finally what I’d always wanted and that was to start my own business.”

Initially focused on CCTV installations for agricultural clients, i-Protech quickly expanded its offerings to include intruder alarms and security systems, gaining accreditation along the way. Over time, the company shifted its focus to renewable energy, driven by Stuart’s early ambition to enter the solar market.

“It took time, but eventually we carved out a space for ourselves in the solar and EV charging arena, and we were among the first, if not the first, OZEV-approved installer in our area for EV charge points.”

Born and brought up in Skene, Westhill, Stuart spent his youth helping on his parents’ farm, picking tatties and strawberries, and helping his dad with the milking of the cows. He also worked at Westhill Service Station as a pump attendant and in the shop. He left school at 15 to begin work for ‘Booth for Better Service’ (as it was then known) in Inverurie as an apprentice TV engineer.

Currently based in Kintore, i-Protech today delivers a full suite of green energy solutions, from domestic solar and battery installations to large-scale commercial systems and ground-mount solar arrays. However, the company’s growth has led to a planned move later this year to larger premises in Westhill to accommodate increased demand and provide more office and storage space for the growing team.

Stuart said: “Technology in this industry moves fast, and we’ve kept pace. Whether it’s smarter, more efficient solar panels or integrated security systems, we continue to invest in the latest tech to bring the best to our customers.”

Reflecting on a decade of challenges, including the global pandemic, Stuart remains optimistic.

“We have learned a huge amount over the past 10 years; it hasn’t always been plain sailing, but this year has been one of our busiest and most productive so far as we go from strength to strength.

“In February, we were awarded ISO 9001 certification, the globally recognised standard for management systems highlighting our commitment to excellence. We also re-branded, launched a new website, and invested in a new fleet of electric vans.

“There are always challenges, but we enjoy finding the solutions. We’ve built a strong team I’m incredibly proud of, and I’m excited to see what the next 10 years bring.”

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
