Member News: ITWORX UK – Nurturing talent has long been a central part of the identity at ITWORX UK – an employee-owned IT and communications partner based in Aberdeen.

The company has built a reputation for creating a future where people thrive through continuous learning and meaningful career opportunities.

Over the past six years, ITWORX UK has demonstrated a sustained commitment to talent development through the QA Apprenticeship Programme. To date, seven team members have either completed or are currently undertaking apprenticeships. Notably, two have progressed from Technicians to Engineers, taking on key roles in project delivery across Scotland and contributing directly to the company’s ongoing success.

“Apprenticeships are a key part of our strategy for developing talent and growing our team from within,” said Stuart Bowlerwell, Technical Director at ITWORX UK. “They offer a flexible, structured path for career development – something that aligns with our values as an employee-owned business.”

With a 100% success rate in supporting apprentices to achieve their qualifications, the company’s results speak for themselves. In September 2024, ITWORX UK welcomed two new apprentices: Brandon Reid, who joined as a Services Technician and is working toward the SCQF Level 8 Diploma in Digital Technology, and Luca Hendry, now a Sales Coordinator, pursuing the SCQF Level 6 Diploma in Digital Applications Support. Ian Smith, Solutions Analyst at ITWORX UK, has also recently completed his SCQF 8 in Cyber Security. These appointments further underscore ITWORX UK’s dedication to developing the next generation of IT professionals across both technical and commercial disciplines.

At ITWORX UK, apprenticeships are viewed not merely as entry-level roles but as the first steps in long-term career journeys, supported by a culture rooted in mentorship, training, and continuous development.

“We believe a single approach to training doesn’t fit everyone,” Stuart added. “Apprenticeships allow us to offer alternative learning pathways grounded in practical experience while also being aligned to recognised qualifications.”

This approach has proven especially effective in producing well-rounded professionals equipped with both theoretical knowledge and real-world expertise.
A strong example is Niall Simpson, now a Network Engineer at ITWORX UK. Niall began his career as an apprentice at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.“Joining ITWORX halfway through my apprenticeship during Covid was difficult, but I’ve been able to progress in my career and achieve further certifications, including the Cisco CCNA,” he shared. “The QA course provided foundational knowledge on a wide range of issues that I now deal with daily. It helped me apply theory in real-world settings.”

Apprenticeships Aligned with Core Values
The company’s approach to apprenticeships is deeply embedded in its core values: People, Partnership, and Service.
People: As an employee-owned business, ITWORX UK places its people at the heart of everything it does. Apprenticeships provide meaningful opportunities for individuals to grow professionally and personally within the organisation.
Partnership: A long-standing collaboration with QA Apprenticeships ensures that each apprentice receives high-quality training and on-the-job support – setting them up for long-term success.
Service: The company is committed to delivering exceptional service – both to clients and employees. Structured mentorship and professional development are essential to maintaining these high standards.

By continuing to invest in apprenticeships, ITWORX UK is not only helping to shape the next generation of IT professionals but also strengthening its position as a forward-thinking, people-first business that understands the value of long-term growth.

“Apprenticeships help bridge the skills gap in the IT industry,” Stuart said. “They enable people to grow while remaining in the workforce, keeping their knowledge current and their experience relevant.”

“We’re proud of the progress our apprentices have made – and even prouder of the careers they’re building here with us,” he concluded. “It’s a win for the individual, for our business, and for the broader IT community.”

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Scottish Renewables

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
