Water cycle workshop to run in science centres across Scotland
Scottish Water, in partnership with Aberdeen Science Centre, has expanded its Water Cycle Workshop across other science centres in Scotland as part of its Generation H2O education programme.
After creating the Water Cycle Workshop with Aberdeen Science Centre last year, as a positive legacy of hosting its Annual Consultation Meeting (ACM), the publicly owned utility is expanding the workshop to Dundee Science Centre, Glasgow Science Centre, Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, and the Highlands and Islands through outreach with the Science Skills Academy, collectively reaching more than 2,400 primary school children over the next ten months.
The workshop dives into the fascinating world of water with a hands-on workshop where pupils make a mini water cycle and investigate the processes involved in having clean, safe water in our taps.
It will also provide access to water focused STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) resources, while increasing the knowledge of the water cycle water treatment processes and understanding of the importance of water and how to conserve it.
Alex Plant, Scottish Water Chief Executive, said: “It’s fantastic to see this positive legacy, which follows on from our Annual Consultative Meeting last year in Aberdeen, and this year in Dundee. Expanding the workshop to other Science Centres across Scotland is an important step in developing key STEM skills and inspiring the next generation, some of whom may form part of our future workforce. And all of this helps to get across to young people the importance and value of water, on which we all depend.”
Aberdeen Science Centre has been pivotal in leading and managing the Water Cycle Expansion project and are responsible for training project partners in the delivery, evaluation and follow-up of the Water Cycle Workshop.
As part of the collaboration extension, Scottish Water will fund delivery of the Water Cycle Workshop to 360 pupils visiting Aberdeen Science Centre from schools in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and parts of Moray.
Bryan Snelling, Chief Executive Officer at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “We are honoured to continue our collaboration with Scottish Water on the Water Cycle Workshop, as we expand its reach to other science centres and venues across Scotland.
“The conservation of water, one of our most precious resources, is vital and we hope that by joining forces with other science centres across Scotland to deliver the workshop, we can vastly increase its engagement and make a big impact on our consumption of water and our awareness of this as an issue.”
Funded workshops will also be available to primary schools in Glasgow and Greater Glasgow, Dundee, Angus and parts of Fife, Edinburgh, The Lothians, Caithness and Orkney.
The workshops are being funded as part of Scottish Water’s Generation H2O programme which aims to teach young people the importance of our precious resource and inspire responsible water citizens. Since launch in September 2023, more than 900 teachers have registered for Generation H2O reaching nearly 59,000 young people.
A limited number of funded tickets are available for school classes to visit Aberdeen Science Centre and take part in the Water Cycle Workshop.
