The First Minister Talks Energy with ETZ Ltd

ETZ Ltd was delighted to host a roundtable in March with the First Minister, John Swinney and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Action and Energy, Gillian Martin focusing on the importance of energy security.

The discussion, convened by ETZ Ltd, included leaders from across the energy industry and there was agreement that both renewable energy and oil and gas play an essential part in achieving a balanced transition. The role the North East plays as a world-class supply chain base that stands ready to deliver projects across the energy industry was emphasised throughout.

What the North Thinks

ETZ Ltd partnered with True North Advisors to commission respected research analysts, Diffley Partnership , to conduct the first independent survey of 3,000 people in the North of Scotland (Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen City, Angus, Highland, Moray, Perth and Kinross) most impacted by the energy transition.

Unveiled at ‘What the North Thinks’ – ETZ Ltd’s first event of its kind – the study delivered vital insights into issues such as the delivery of renewable energy projects, upgrading Scotland’s electricity grid and the role of oil and gas.

The event brought over 100 industry leaders together to hear the results which showed there is a clear and positive appetite towards energy transition, which is very encouraging but there are several challenges and issues identified within the survey that must be addressed if this sentiment is to be enhanced. Despite the challenges, the size of the potential prize for the North East of Scotland is vast. The survey revealed that 55% of respondents believe that the upgrades will create new jobs and 42% think the upgrades will be good for their community, this must therefore be reflected through jobs and investment in the region.

ETZ Ltd Continues to Deliver Valuable Events for the Supply Chain

In the last quarter, ETZ Ltd delivered two key events for the supply chain, ‘Unlocking ASEAN: Export Opportunities for North East Scotland Supply Chains’ and ‘Offshore Wind Masterclass: Turning Pipeline Visibility into Opportunities’. The internationalisation event, hosted in partnership with Scottish Development International (SDI), explored the wealth of low carbon energy opportunities emerging from South East Asia’s rapidly growing markets. Attendees heard about key projects in the ASEAN region and strategies for expanding their operations into these markets.

ETZ Ltd brought delegates together on the 18th February at The Marcliffe for the offshore wind masterclass, delivered by the EIC (Energy Industries Council). Attendees heard from Seaway7 , TechnipFMC and Venterra Group as they shared experiences operating in the offshore wind market in the UK and globally, including tips on how the oil and gas supply chain can transition into renewable projects.

Community & Coast Update

As part of ETZ Ltd’s future plans to develop a site within the south-eastern area of St Fittick’s Park to support energy transition activity, ETZ Ltd is committed to making upfront impactful investments that significantly enhance community amenities and access in the remaining greenspace.

ETZ Ltd has received planning permission from Aberdeen Counciland started work on three greenspace enhancement projects in St Fittick’s Park and the adjacent Tullos Playing Fields.

The East Tullos Burn and wetlands restoration projects are well underway. The restoration works address water quality issues, improve biodiversity and include an extended path network with three new bridges to improve opportunities to enjoy the wetlands and connect through to Tullos Playing Fields.

Recreational and access improvement works underway at Tullos Playing Fields have been co-designed with members of Dee United FC, the Denis Law Legacy Trustand local young people from the Granite City Speaks youth forum. This will increase opportunities for sport, play and community use.

Conservation works are also underway at St Fittick’s Church, a 12th-century scheduled monument, to restore its historic character, improve its visual appearance, access, and interpretation, whilst protecting the church for future generations.

These community amenity and biodiversity projects are informed by ETZ Ltd’s Greenspace Use Survey

Get in touch

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Scottish Renewables

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

All-Energy

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Vattenfall

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
