Member News: Aberdeen Science Centre Extends Apache Stem Laboratory Partnership

Aberdeen Science Centre has renewed its partnership with Apache Corporation to sponsor the centre’s STEM laboratory, which engaged almost 5,000 children and young people over the last 18 months through interactive, hands-on fun science experiences.

Investment from the independent energy company will be used to deliver activities and engaging learning experiences in The Lab, Aberdeen Science Centre’s fully equipped, hands-on science laboratory and classroom space used for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) workshops, school visits, community group events and venue hire.

Activities delivered in The Lab give children and young people the opportunity to take part in hands-on experiences that encourage an early interest in STEM subjects, build their confidence and help them to develop an understanding of the world around them through science.

The partnership, first formed in 2024, underscores Apache’s commitment to supporting STEM education, and allowed more than 4,700 school pupils from across the North-east of Scotland to take part in a workshop in The Lab in 2025 and the first half of 2026.

The Lab has also hosted 20 workshops for community groups, welcoming over 300 community visitors, and a further 153 public workshops open to all ages.

More than 100 birthday parties have been held in the space too, with more than 1,380 guests passing through The Lab’s doors to celebrate.

Steph McCann, head of fundraising at Aberdeen Science Centre, said:

“The Lab is a highlight for so many visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre, and thanks to Apache’s ongoing support, we can continue delivering memorable STEM learning experiences in this space. In the last year, we’ve welcomed close to 5,000 children and young people to workshops, demonstrations and parties in The Lab, and we hope this will do much to inspire the scientists, engineers and innovators of the future.

“As a registered charity, corporate partnerships and sponsorship are invaluable in allowing us to continue creating and delivering fun and engaging science experiences for people of all ages, not just within our centre but at local schools and in communities across the North-east of Scotland and beyond.”

“At Apache, we recognize the importance of investing in educational opportunities that help young people learn, grow and reach their potential,” said Stuart Taylor, operations director at Apache Corporation. “The Aberdeen Science Centre provides inspiring and accessible STEM experiences that engage thousands of children and families each year, and we look forward to continuing our support of The Lab and the lasting impact it has across the North-east of Scotland.”

Activities held in The Lab covered a variety of different scientific topics as part of the centre’s public programme themes throughout the year, including experiences focused on chemistry, engineering, forensics and the human body.

Through invaluable sponsorships, Aberdeen Science Centre will continue delivering engaging activities for the North-east of Scotland and help to safeguard the legacy of Scotland’s oldest science centre.

In addition to corporate sponsorship opportunities, the science visitor attraction, which is open seven days a week, also offers exclusive venue and room hire for corporate, social and private events.

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
