Member News: MacArtney names Donald Macleod as UK and Ireland Managing Director

Global underwater technology leader MacArtney has appointed Donald Macleod as Managing Director of its UK and Ireland business, the company’s largest operation outside Denmark.

Based in Dyce, close to Aberdeen Airport, MacArtney has served the UK and Ireland since 1999, supporting the marine, offshore, ocean science and naval sectors.

Donald spent more than six years with Dutch marine contractor Boskalis, latterly as Quality and Transformation Director for its offshore energy division. Before that, he served as the Engineering, SHEQ (safety, health, environment, and quality), and Supply Chain Director for its subsea services arm.

Previously, he was Managing Director of Highland Fuels, one of Scotland’s major independent fuel distributors, and Operations Director at energy industry consultancy PDi.

Niels Peter Christiansen, Chief Executive of MacArtney, said:

“The UK and Ireland are a key market, and Aberdeen is central to how we serve the North Sea and beyond. Donald’s background gives him firsthand insight into the challenges and considerations our customers face, putting him in an ideal position to grow the business.

“With him in post, our operation benefits from strong local leadership, backed by the resources of an international organisation.”

Donald Macleod, Managing Director, MacArtney UK and Ireland, said:

“MacArtney is a well-established international business with a strong heritage and excellent reputation. The founders’ values, with entrepreneurship, quality and people at their heart, very much align with my own.

“Throughout my career, I’ve worked alongside suppliers and customers, and good relationships come down to open communication, responsiveness and reliable products. I see opportunities to build on MacArtney’s position as a trusted partner to the energy sector, while exploring further growth in defence and ocean science.

“The Aberdeen team has built solid foundations, and I look forward to working with colleagues across the group to take the UK and Ireland operation into its next phase.”

Donald will work closely with Paul McCafferty, group Chief Commercial Officer, who joined the company in March.

MacArtney’s Aberdeen team of 55 works from a purpose-built 3,000 m² facility with cable assembly and moulding workshops, a 1,000 m² warehouse, and a hydrostatic pressure test facility that simulates depths of up to 6,000 m.

Founded in 1978 by Martin and Winnie MacArtney and still family-owned, MacArtney designs, manufactures, supplies and services the connectivity and data acquisition equipment and systems that link surface and seabed. Its brands include SubConn® wet mateable connectors, OptoLink™ fibre optic connectors, GreenLink™ flexible grid connectivity solutions and the FOCUS™ and TRIAXUS™ towed survey vehicles.

Headquartered in Esbjerg, it employs around 500 people across 21 operations and sales offices in Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Asia Pacific, supported by 18 distributor locations.

In its latest financial year, revenue rose 18% to £150 million (DKK 1,281 million, US$205 million). For further information on MacArtney, visit www.macartney.com

AREG is the original energy transition organisation, working on behalf of members to empower the energy supply chain and champion its expertise. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to find out more about membership.

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
