Member News: Partnership set to unlock international growth for subsea controls specialist

Leading subsea controls specialist J+S Subsea Limited has stepped up its plans to grow in a key international market by forming a new partnership.

The Aberdeen-based company has teamed up with Perth, WA-based Pulse Technology Hub to create a united platform for growth across Australia and the wider APAC region. The venture will enable J+S Subsea Limited to access Pulse’s local knowledge, experienced team, and in-country facilities, preceded by six months of collaborative strategic market research to maximise regional growth potential.

It is expected that the relationship will spark the creation of an unspecified number of jobs at J+S Subsea Limited, both in the UK and in Australia, as the alliance gathers pace.

The move follows initial market analysis highlighting late-life assets and ageing subsea infrastructure that will benefit from the increased efficiency, urgency and turnaround made possible by being located closer to a growing customer base.

The collaboration with Pulse Technology Hub, which has been supported by Scottish Enterprise’s international trade team, represents an important extension of J+S Subsea Limited’s Legacy Locker™ ethos which provides reuse options for clients’ existing stock and enables the purchase and recovery of items identified to be scrapped into re-certified and available off-the-shelf components to support the circular economy. By embracing practices that prioritise recycling, reuse, and repurposing Legacy Locker™ allows clients to unlock capital tied up in unwanted equipment and helps users to boost their environmental credentials by finding ways to reduce waste.

Commenting on the company’s plans to grow in and around Australia, Phil Reid, Managing Director of J+S Subsea Limited said:

“Previous work in Australia has demonstrated to us the significant potential that exists not only in Australia itself, but across the wider APAC region. As we look to consolidate that experience and strengthen our position in this important market, it makes sense to partner with an established local name that brings knowledge, expertise, and connections.

“This is not just about extending our geographic reach but about developing the right in-country relationships that will allow us to meet the evolving needs of clients in the region.”

He added:

“Working with Pulse Technology Hub allows us to combine our strengths and create a platform from which we can capitalise on mutually beneficial opportunities, enhancing our offering to customers and delivering greater value.”

Ian Grant, CEO of Pulse Technology Hub, said:

“J+S Subsea’s Legacy Locker™ approach aligns closely with the challenges Australian operators face around late-life assets, ageing infrastructure and the circular economy. We see a genuine fit between J+S Subsea’s proven capability and the needs of the Australian market, and Pulse can help turn that potential into practical opportunities by providing the local relationships, market knowledge and in-country support needed to establish and grow here.”

SE International Trade Specialist, Karen Donnelly, added:

“Supporting companies to scale internationally is a priority for us, and it’s great to see the progress J+S Subsea Limited has made in recent months through our International Strategy Development programme. The company is making an important contribution to Scotland’s energy transition through subsea decommissioning and, with our support, is realising its international growth ambitions in Australia and the wider APAC region. This partnership combines specialist expertise with in-market knowledge, and we look forward to seeing the opportunities it creates.”

AREG has played an important role in the growth of Scotland’s renewable energy sector, engaging the supply chain and developing the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. However, we are only at the very beginning of the transition that AREG was established to both lead and support so there are still opportunities for companies to get into the constantly evolving renewables supply chain. We look forward to continuing our work together as renewables builds on its place as Scotland’s main source of power, and as we seek to deliver real change in the crucial areas of heat and transport.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with AREG since its formation. The recent progress in the developments of offshore wind projects by Equinor and Vattenfall are as a result of the work of the group over many years. The north-east is known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. At the Chamber, we believe the region must evolve its position to being recognised as the energy capital. Whilst hydrocarbons will continue to be essential in driving our economy for years to come, the generation of renewable resources will play an increasingly important role in providing cost-effective power, innovative development and economic growth.

The enthusiasm and dedication of the early group that would become AREG was fundamental in us choosing to launch All-Energy in Aberdeen. The first tiny show was held in 2001, and AREG’s Chairman at the time, Jeremy Cresswell, played such an active role that I often describe him in terms such as All-Energy’s ‘midwife’. All-Energy is now the UK’s largest renewable and low carbon energy exhibition and conference in terms of number of attendees, space booked, and number of exhibiting companies. As AREG became firmly established, their presence and support for the event grew spectacularly over the years. We thank them most sincerely for their invaluable input.

Vattenfall has forged a strong working relationship with AREG through the development of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre. AREG has worked tirelessly on behalf of the North East and it can take enormous credit for the growth of sustainable energy in the region and the path it has cleared for the region to capture further investment.

Aberdeen City and Shire is emerging as a key location for renewables by successfully transferring its world-class oil and gas expertise into the sector and AREG has done much to advance this through a broad range of initiatives. It has acted as a catalyst in driving further investment in the local economy by engaging with companies, Government, public bodies and existing projects and we have been pleased to support their efforts. Scottish Enterprise will continue to engage with AREG as we increase Scotland’s use of renewable energy.
