SSEN Transmission has today published a new economic report setting out the significant economic benefits associated with its planned £29bn investment in new and upgraded electricity transmission infrastructure across the north of Scotland.
The report, titled ‘Re‑energising the North: Transforming Scotland’, provides an update on the business’s previously outlined economic analysis on plans to invest billions in mission-critical grid infrastructure, providing further insight into the scale of economic opportunity associated with the investment programme.
The analysis demonstrates how investment in the electricity transmission network will play a central role in supporting Scotland and the UK’s transition to secure, affordable, clean power, while delivering substantial long-term economic growth.
The report reaffirms SSEN Transmission’s programme as one of the largest private infrastructure investments in Scotland’s history, with around £29bn of planned investment across the north of Scotland in the next five years, and it details the extent of the economic opportunity across the region.
Using advanced economic modelling to analyse the impact of clean power infrastructure investment, the report’s findings conclude that SSEN Transmission’s investment:
- Will support up to 10,000 jobs in the north of Scotland, and 24,000 across Scotland;
- When added to investment by other transmission operators and investment in generation will add around £60bn to UK economic output – with the Scottish economy up to 3% larger over the long term;
- Will deliver long-term improvements in productivity, wages and economic resilience, with employees moving into higher-value roles and key sectors expanding permanently; and
- Will create unique opportunities for Scottish suppliers, businesses and communities across multiple sectors, including forestry, peatland restoration, aggregates and concrete too.
The findings highlight the importance of ensuring that the benefits of investment are felt locally, with thousands of skilled jobs, increased supply chain activity, and investment flowing into communities across the north of Scotland.
The report, developed using advanced modelling techniques widely used by governments and validated by leading economic experts, demonstrates that while major infrastructure investment can create short-term pressures, the long-term economic benefits are significant and enduring.

The report also sets out how investment in the transmission network will unlock further private investment in renewable energy, acting as a catalyst for wider economic activity across Scotland and the UK.As the UK and Scottish governments pursue energy security and clean power targets, SSEN Transmission’s programme will play a critical role in connecting new renewable generation and ensuring that lower-cost, homegrown energy can be transported to where it is needed.
In concluding, the report reiterates the assertion that there can be no successful energy transition without transmission infrastructure – and no sustainable transition unless the economic benefits are shared with the communities that will help to shape and host it.

BUILDING A CAREER ACROSS GENERATIONS: MEET DAVE MCKAY, NETWORK DIRECTOR AT SSEN TRANSMISSION
ave McKay’s career with SSEN Transmission spans nearly four decades – an experience that reflects the long-term opportunities the business has created across generations, and those it is now building for the future.
Originally from Elgin in Moray, Dave’s connection to the company began long before he joined. His father worked as an overhead linesman, giving him an early insight into both the work and the people behind the network:
“I always really liked how he talked about the company and what he did,” Dave recalls. “So, I always knew that I wanted to work here.”
At 17, he joined as a sponsored student, starting a career that has taken him across the business and through a period of significant growth and change. Today, as Network Director, he leads a broad portfolio spanning system planning, engineering, operations, the control room and asset management – playing a central role in shaping the network that will support the UK’s energy transition.
For Dave, one of the most striking changes has been the scale of growth in recent years:
“Back in 2019 we had fewer than 500 people in transmission – now we’re well over 2,500, approaching 3,000,” he says.
That growth reflects not only the expansion of SSEN Transmission itself, but the wider opportunity being created across Scotland and the UK. Through major investment in infrastructure, the business is supporting thousands of jobs – both directly and across its supply chain – bringing new opportunities into communities where it operates.
Dave sees this as a continuation of a long-standing legacy:
“This company has a really proud track record of creating jobs and opportunities,” he says. “And not just for ourselves, but in our supply chain as well.”
With three generations of his own family connected to the business – from his father working as an overhead linesman, to Dave himself, and his son who has also worked within the company in the HR department – he understands first-hand the impact that long-term, skilled careers can have, not just for individuals, but for communities over time.
As SSEN Transmission enters a new phase of delivery, he believes the scale of opportunity will only increase. The investment programme needed to deliver a secure, low-carbon energy system is creating the conditions for more people to build lasting careers in the sector – just as he has:
“I think as we move into the delivery phase of our projects, you’ll see a real ramp up in opportunities for people across the country,” he adds.
For Dave, that is what makes the current moment so important. After nearly 40 years with the company, he sees the next chapter not just as a continuation of its history – but as a chance to create many more stories like his in the decades ahead.
