SSEN Transmission has set out plans to develop a new state of the art training facility in the north east of Scotland, supporting the next generation of electricity network engineers as the company continues its rapid expansion to deliver the upgrades needed to meet the country’s clean energy ambitions.
The proposed facility in Aberdeenshire would become a dedicated training hub for SSEN Transmission’s workforce and its contractors, providing specialist capability to support the operation, maintenance and development of the high-voltage electricity network. The plans form part of SSEN Transmission’s £29 billion wider investment programme to strengthen the north of Scotland’s electricity infrastructure, reflecting the significant scale of growth the business has experienced – expanding five-fold over the past five years – as it accelerates delivery of critical network upgrades and support the transition to a secure, low carbon energy system. Public consultation events will take place this year to help shape the design of the new facility to help inform the planning application. Subject to all necessary planning approvals, the facility is expected to be delivered in the early 2030s. Once operational, the training school would support hundreds of trainees each year, helping meet the growing demand for skilled workers by providing hands-on experience across a range of operational scenarios. Around 10 permanent roles are expected to be based at the facility, including training, operational and support staff. The roles will be complemented by experienced local engineers and external tutors, helping to deliver a high-quality training programme.
The new facility will bring additional economic benefits for local businesses including shops, hospitality and other sectors from the activity at the new training centre.
The north east facility would complement and enhance training provision at the existing Faskally Training Centre in Perth, providing a purpose-built environment tailored specifically to the needs of a modern electricity transmission company. The new site will contain a blend of existing and new technologies and also space where innovation can be tested before deployment.

Located in Aberdeenshire – an area with a strong engineering heritage and evolving energy sector – the training facility would also support wider regional economic activity, aligned with SSEN Transmission’s rapid growth and expanding role in delivering Scotland’s clean power infrastructure.
The new facility follows on from SSEN Transmission’s plans to recruit 600 ‘earn as you learn’ roles until 2030, announced in November last year, as the company continues to expand and reaffirm its commitment to the energy workers of the future.
