Member News: SSEN Transmission volunteers help transform Airlie House garden in Kintore

A garden at a sheltered housing complex in Kintore has been given a summer makeover thanks to SSEN Transmission volunteers who answered a call to help revitalise the space.

The team from the Kintore substation project joined members of Kintore and District Community Council, the Kintore community and volunteers from the local Men’s Shed to carry out improvement works at Airlie House sheltered housing complex.

The work was undertaken as part of the Keep Scotland Beautiful It’s Your Neighbourhood scheme, a community gardening initiative that encourages local groups to enhance and ‘green up’ their neighbourhoods.

As well as building a pergola for residents to enjoy, the volunteers weeded and tidied flower beds in preparation for new planting and carried out a range of improvements across the garden.

Kintore substation Community Liaison Manager Rob Whytock was joined by fellow SSEN Transmission volunteers Catherine Cowie, Liam Tarburn, Christine Stewart, Erin Mutch, Simone Gilmartin, Fraser Stewart and Shahroon Tahir as part of the two-day effort. Additional support was provided by staff from Omexom, key contractors on the Kintore substation project.

Rob said: “We’re committed to supporting the communities where our infrastructure is located, and we were delighted to answer the call from Kintore and District Community Council to help spruce up the garden at Airlie House.

“The Kintore substation team has built a great relationship with the community council, which does so much valuable work in the local area. We’d like to thank them for the opportunity to get involved, as well as for keeping us well supplied with refreshments throughout the project.

“We hope residents enjoy the garden as much as we enjoyed helping to improve it. We’re always keen to support local organisations that are making a positive difference in the community, and we look forward to getting involved in future projects.”

Kintore and District Community Council Chair Moira Moran added:

“The community council and residents of Airlie House are very grateful for the assistance provided by the SSEN Transmission team and their contractors in improving the appearance of the garden grounds.

“Their efforts, combined with those of other volunteers from local community groups and businesses, have made a huge difference.”

The pergola will provide a sheltered outdoor space where residents can enjoy the revitalised garden area
