Member News: Super summer powers up at Aberdeen Science Centre

Aberdeen Science Centre is bringing the science behind popular superheroes’ powers to life in a new and interactive family experience. The Super Science Show, available throughout the school summer holidays in July and August, will provide an inside look at how powers like controlling the weather, x-ray vision and invisibility show up in real science. From safely creating fire and ice to exploring levitation, invincibility and shapeshifting, participants in the show can step into the boots of their favourite costumed crimefighters for the day. Suitable for family members aged 6 and up, the Super Science Show will feature fun and exciting live science demonstrations, complete with flashes, lights, lasers and a few special surprises.

Lynda McConnach, public and digital programme co-ordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said:

“Seen in comics, movies, TV and more, superheroes have truly captured the imagination of children and adults around the world thanks to amazing feats of strength, colourful costumes and a desire to make the world a better place.

“This summer we want to embrace the love of costumed crimefighters by exploring how some of the most popular superpowers can be created in real-life using some spectacular science. In the Super Science Show, we will take families on a journey through a variety of powers, including strength, size manipulation and telekinesis, and teach them how to safely see them in the real-world.”

Participation in the Super Science Show is included as part of the standard entry price at Aberdeen Science Centre. Visitors can also explore the centre and its interactive exhibits before and after the event. Sidekicks and superheroes-in-training under the age of six can also join in on the fun this summer in special storytelling sessions held in the centre’s designated Under-6 Zone.

Also running at Aberdeen Science Centre this summer is a new Virtual Reality (VR) experience that allows visitors to step through time and travel to the Roman Colosseum, watch the Olympics in Ancient Greece, walk with dinosaurs or discover more about the evolution of the human race.

Additionally, Parents and children across Aberdeen city and shire can win a free day of science family fun at the centre if they can find a hidden family ticket somewhere in the North-east during the school summer holidays. Twice a week until Wednesday, August 12, the team at Aberdeen Science Centre will hide a family pass to the centre somewhere within Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire and tease its location on social media.

“The school summer holidays are some of the best weeks of the year and we want to encourage families to create meaningful memories together. By exploring how superpowers work, stepping back in time or searching high and low for hidden treasures, we hope that Aberdeen Science Centre will be the home of many of those precious family moments over the coming weeks.”
