Swedish energy group Vattenfall will use turbines by Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS) mounted on towers made with low-emissions steel for its 63-MW Clashindarroch II onshore wind project in Scotland.
Vattenfall said on Friday it has ordered 14 units of the Vestas V136 4.5 MW machines for the project, with the contract covering the supply, installation, and commissioning of the hardware. A 30-year service agreement is also part of the deal.
In line with Vattenfall’s commitment for a 50% reduction of emissions from supply chain goods and services by 2030, parts of the turbine towers will be made with low-emission steel coming from ArcelorMittal’s steel mill in Belgium. This will lower towers’ overall carbon footprint by 36%.
According to the statement, Clashindarroch II will be the first onshore wind farm for both Vattenfall and Vestas in which low-emission steel is used in the tower fabrication process.
The Clashindarroch II wind park will be built near Huntly, next to Vattenfall’s existing Clashindarroch Wind Farm. The extension is expected to generate electricity equal to the annual power demand of around 61,500 homes. With preparatory works underway, main construction activities at the site are planned to begin this spring. The wind farm is due to go online in the summer of 2027.
